Team Viking prove their racing credentials at Brands Hatch
The three-driver team in car 110 proved their mettle at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit at round three of the UK Fun Cup with an impressive top ten finish in the four-hour race.
After a successful qualifying session, Team Viking were to begin the four-hour race on the shorter track at Brands Hatch in P6. Nick Nunn was drawn to drive the first and fourth 40 minute stint with Jim Hadfield second and fifth, and Team Manager Mark Holme taking the third and final stints.
Nunn was strong off the grid and soon found himself up to fourth. On the eighth lap Nunn went for an ambitious overtake, but was clipped by the car he was trying to pass. He spun and although was only off the track for 17 seconds, found himself down in 29th. Then it was time for the drivers to fight their way back up the pack. "We were running at the front and unfortunately, after the spin we were losing time every lap as we were compromised by the slower cars. We were losing about 1.5s per lap," explained Team Manager Mark Holme.
In the past Team Viking might have capitulated this position, but with experience and much more race craft the three drivers pulled together and started advancing. After the first hour of racing they found themselves back up to 15th. The team's focus meant it was an incident-free race, apart from the early mistake, and car 110 crossed the finish line in 10th.
"Our lap times were consistent and we are now in the running," said Holme. "Of the teams that finished in front of us, seven of the teams have professionals drivers in them, we've worked hard and have earned our position in the standings."
Team Viking now has a solid strategy for their race but it will be tested at the next round. On Saturday 05 August the team will be racing at Snetterton in a six-hour race. "We're in great form," said Holme. "But this will provide a real test of how far we've come. We have to make sure we look after the car, manage our position and that we're slick and efficient in the pits. We've earned our positions this season and we want to continue in the same form," he concluded.
The Brands Hatch result sees Team Viking 12th in the Championship.
