It’s already been a tough acclimatisation for the Team Viking & Ursus Capital Racing crew, returning to Fun Cup Uk after two seasons in France.
But things had gone well in both pre-race practice and qualifying at Donington,10th quickest of the 26-car grid. “We set some good times with no tow and tyres that had gone off, it’s now a case of reliability and good stops, with no issues,” said Mark Holme.
They had hoped for a good grid draw for the one-hour sprint race, but that was the first disappointment of the day, when they drew 23rd!!
Holme took the opening stint and made eight places in the first 10 laps. They were up to ninth before the first mandatory stop, when Holme came in to hand over to Nick Nunn.
Nunn continued to battle just outside the top 10 and became embroiled in a five-car battle for eighth place, pitting for the second time from a challenging fifth.
With Holme taking the car to the flag he shared a couple of late exchanges with GCI Racng, before taking the flag in ninth, which later became eight after post race penalties had been given.
“I was last after an early incident, when I spun to avoid another car at the chicane. Then got up to pace and finished in the top 10 after a late dual,” he added.
They thought the grid draw for race one was bad, but for race two it was even worse, 25th and penultimate place!!
Nunn took the first stint in the three-hour race and again made steady progress and was up to 16th by lap 16 when the safety car was called out.
He had been duelling with the Team Sunoco car, but having headed the dual on lap19, a lap later he was hit hard in the rear at Redgate as his challenger outbraked himself.
He limped back to the pits with a bent rear end, exhaust and axle damage. “Nick was so unlucky, just after the safety car they were together, we kept him tuned in and we had good pace again, before that happened,” Holme explained.
“They were drafting me, I kept my line, turned into the corner and was hit hard,” Nunn added.
The car did eventually go back on track again, but its race was over.
